Magnesium – Basics
Magnesium is essential for energy metabolism, muscles, nerves, and bones. The crucial factor is the amount of elemental magnesium – not the weight of the compound. The EFSA/DGE recommends an intake of approximately 300–350 mg/day from all sources for adults. [EFSA] [DGE]
Comparison criteria
- Elemental magnesium per daily serving
- Compounds (e.g. bisglycinate, citrate, malate, carbonate, oxide) and practical compatibility
- Additives & Declaration (Clean Label)
- Synergies (e.g., vitamin B6)
- Ease of intake (portion size, number of capsules)
Overview of magnesium compounds
Why NUVÉRA does not use magnesium oxide
Magnesium oxide is frequently used in inexpensive supplements – it's cheap and, theoretically, provides a high amount of elemental magnesium. In practice, however, it turns out that the oxide is poorly soluble and is absorbed much less effectively compared to organically bound compounds. Consumers see high numbers on the label, but the benefit is often less significant.
NUVÉRA consciously chooses to do otherwise. We rely on organically bound compounds such as bisglycinate and (tri)citrate, supplemented by carbonate in carefully considered dosages – in line with our philosophy: quality over quantity, effectiveness over marketing figures.
| Connection | character | Practice |
|---|---|---|
| Magnesium bisglycinate | Organically bound chelate | Good tolerability; often preferred |
| Trimagnesium dicitrate (citrate) | Organic compound with good solubility | Suitable for everyday use, widely used in premium formulations |
| Magnesium malate | Organic compound | Established; useful depending on the objective |
| Magnesium carbonate | Inorganic; buffering properties | Practical as part of a mix |
| Magnesium oxide | Inorganic; high nominal Mg density | Low solubility and absorption; frequently found in inexpensive products |

Our recommendation: NUVÉRA TriMagnum
Of all the preparations compared, TriMagnum stands out due to its clarity of formulation – not through maximum numbers, but through a well-thought-out combination of three compounds and vitamin B6.
- 250.5 mg of magnesium per daily serving – consciously dosed and suitable for everyday use.
- Three forms in synergy: bisglycinate, (tri)citrate, carbonate
- Vitamin B6 – a useful supplement (see EFSA functions below)
- Clean Label: vegan, without unnecessary additives, transparently declared.
- Price & Packaging: 90 capsules · €29.99 → approx. €1.00/day
Why number 1?
- Well-considered dosage: 250.5 mg elemental magnesium/day – within the framework of the BfR recommendation (250 mg/day in food supplements).
- Formula with three compounds: bisglycinate, (tri)citrate, carbonate – combines solubility, tolerability and buffering.
- Meaningful synergy: 0.3 mg of vitamin B6 complements the formulation without "maximizing numbers".
- Clean Label & Practice: vegan, without unnecessary additives; clear portioning (3 capsules/day).
- Fair price-performance ratio: 90 capsules · €29.99 → ≈ €1.00/day .
Other products sometimes score points with a higher nominal quantity, but often rely on oxide or more excipients. TriMagnum achieves the overall victory because it combines quality, tolerability, and transparency in a dose suitable for everyday use.
EFSA-confirmed effects
- Magnesium contributes to: normal energy metabolism, reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal function of muscles and nervous system, normal psychological function, and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth.
- Vitamin B6 contributes to: normal energy metabolism, normal function of the nervous and immune systems, and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Legal basis: Regulation (EU) 432/2012.
FAQ
How much magnesium is beneficial?
For adults, the EFSA/DGE recommends approximately 300–350 mg/day from all sources. [EFSA] [DGE]
Are there upper limits for dietary supplements?
The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) recommends a maximum daily intake of 250 mg of magnesium from food supplements, in addition to a balanced diet, and advises dividing the intake into several portions. [BfR]
Does the connection matter?
Yes. Organically bound forms such as bisglycinate or (tri)citrate are readily soluble and generally well tolerated. While oxide may appear high on the label, it is significantly less effective in terms of absorption. Crucially, clear labeling and a sensible overall formulation are essential.
